Your future is behind you, sir
full of joy, laughter, adventures
and seemingly bottomless glasses of wine.
And coffee the morning after
you spent Friday night on the couch
watching too much TV.
It’s a future full of tasks
and budgets, and dusting, and laundry.
Weddings, picnics and National Parks.
Lots of National Parks.
It’s a future with a spat here and there
and talks - sometimes heated, though you mostly agree.
It's a future safe for dreams,
and tears.
Especially when they're yours.

What's behind you is waiting,
waiting to cheer you on,
waiting to be cheered on
day in and day out
over the big things and the little.
Waiting for your gangly wingspan to embrace it
each day when you're home from work.
Waiting to see if you will be good parents,
when the time comes.
Fool, don't waste another second
looking in front of you
without this one beside you.
You've done that long enough.
This one,
this one here,
is ready for the race.
The long race.
See your future behind you.
Grab her by the hand.
Run together,
leaving joy in your wake.
-.-
